Clinical Model

Founded in 1973 by GW School of Medicine’s very own Dean Lawrence “Bopper” Deyton, Whitman Walker has been at the forefront of providing inclusive community-based primary care in DC. Whitman Walker began as a Gay Men’s VD Free Health Clinic operating out of the Georgetown Lutheran Church. While Whitman Walker still specializes in LGBTQ and HIV care, it has since expanded to 5 locations to provide services ranging anywhere from legal and insurance navigation to dental and behavioral health. The GW Healing Clinic is fortunate to have a partnership with Whitman Walker Health, providing students with a unique opportunity to educate and counsel the community on sexual risk behaviors, conduct one-on-one HIV testing, and link patients to care as needed.

About HIV Testing

Whitman-Walker Health provides both the third-generation finger stick antibody test as well as the fourth-generation blood antigen test, though the fourth-generation is only offered at specific times by medical providers. No appointment is needed for the third-generation HIV test at Whitman-Walker Health. All counseling, testing, and referral services are confidential and free of charge, but donations are welcome.

About STI Testing

Clients also have the option for free STI testing after their HIV test results are given. Testing for gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis using a Self-Test Kit is available during select daytime hours. A blood draw is taken for syphilis, while a urine and swasample is taken for gonorrhea and chlamydia. Test results take 5-8 business days and are available for clients on Whitman-Walker Health’s patient portal.

Note: The STI Self-Test Kit is routine screening meant for patients who are not experiencing symptoms of sexually transmitted infections. If patients are experiencing symptoms or are concerned about contracting STIs from a specific encounter, they will be referred to the Gay Man’s Health & Wellness Evening STI Clinic on Tuesdays & Thursdays, 4-8pm.
